Every student at ASU is assigned an academic advisor to assist in their academic choices and career decisions. Most new students will first meet with an academic advisor at New Student Orientation. Advisors are assigned to a student by the academic department of their chosen major. Every semester prior to enrollment for an upcoming semester, students must meet with their academic advisor to discuss the courses they plan to take, academic concerns that may be prevalent registration and relevant career/major information. Once the student has met with their advisor, the advisor will remove the advising hold to permit the student to register for the next semester.
NOTE:Advisors only lift the advising hold. Students may have additional holds that stop registration. Please check your self-service account to check for registration holds.
Where do I go if I have not chosen a major? The Wilson Advising Center is staffed with full-time professional advisors specially trained to work with students who are still deciding on a major. Starting this Fall, the center will be open 8:00 am to 6:00 pm (M-R) and 8:00 to 5:00 (F). The center advisors will assist you in course selection and career exploration until you have chosen your major.
How do I declare a major? Once you are ready to choose a major, you will go to the academic department of the major you have selected. This department will complete the necessary paperwork to change your major and to assign you a new advisor. If you need assistance with selecting a major, click on the "UNDECIDED" link on the student resource page of the Advising Center website.
How do I find out who my advisor is? You advisor should be listed on your Self Service account. If you do not have an advisor listed, please call your academic department to have an advisor assigned.
What should I do to prepare for advising? Advisors are key players in your academic planning and are ideal resources for questions you may have about your career or major. Keep in mind, that your advisor is available throughout the semester. You can see them whenever you have an academic concern. Please contact your advisor during their office hours or through your ASU email account. You will get the most out of your academic advising sessions if you should:
Familiarize self with classes needed for degree completion prior to your meeting.
Decide what questions to ask and write them down in advance.
Set up appointment during advisor’s office hours or let advisor know if you can not make their office hours.
You can usually reach most advisors by calling their academic department of sending an email.
Schedule appointments in advance especially during peek registration times.
Bring appropriate materials with you -- questions, checklist....
Help, I've seen my advisor and I still cannot register. There are a number of holds that will be placed on your account that will prevent you from registration. The most common hold is an academic advising hold. You will need to see your advisor every semester before this hold is removed. However, other holds will also prevent your registration. You can see what your holds are on your Self-Service/Banner account. For a list of most common holds listed below:
Student Accounts - Call the Students Accounts Office at 972-2285
Bad Email Address - Set up your digital ID (see ASU website) or Bad Address - Up date your address on your Self-Service/Banner account and contact the office that set up this hold. Typically this is the Registrar's Office (972-2031) or Student Accounts at 972-2285.
Enhancement Hold/CAAP - Call Sherry Johnson at Academic Affairs at 972-2030.
