ENHANCEMENT Q & A

MATH 1143 Finite Mathematics is an additional general education enhancement course which is now available. This course will count as a math enhancement.

Call Barbara Doyle in Assessment for questions about enhancements or CAAP exam - 972-3931

Please explain the CAAP exam and the enhancement courses. All students under the new general education curriculum (Bulletin 2002 or newer), must take a minimum of three hours of enhancement credit.  Students completing the CAAP exam through June 30, 2007, were required to choose enhancements based on the CAAP exam results.   All students who tested with CAAP prior to July 1, 2007 are required to complete the prescribed enhancement course based on CAAP exam results.  Student who have not been tested with the CAAP exam should consult with their advisor to determine an appropriate enhancement course to fulfill the General Education requirements..  Which and how many enhancement courses students take depends on their placement on the CAAP exam.  Read below.

What are the cutoff scores for the CAAP? Students who receive a minimum score as listed below or greater may choose one additional enhancement course of their choice.  They can choose from the enhancement list or an additional general education course not used to satisfy the general education requirements for specific areas.  NOTE: Students may not have more than two general education courses with the same prefix.

If students receive lower in either or both of the categories listed below, the student must take one or both of the prescribed enhancement courses. (3 to 6 hours of prescribed enhancement).

AAGES             ESAY = 300 or greater.  Students are not required to take a communications enhancement. Under 300 – student must take a communications enhancement. See list below.

AAGES             MATH = 55 or greater.  Student does not need to take a math enhancement.   Under 55 – student must take a math enhancement. See list below

Enhancement courses:

AGRI 2243 Feeding the Planet (elective)

CS  2173/2171 (ME) intro to Structured Programming (elective or math)  & lab

ENG 3013 (CE) Practical Writing (elective or communications)

ENG 3043 (CE) Technical Writing (elective or communications)

ENG 4703 (CE) Persuasive Writing (elective or communications)

JOUR/RTV 1003 (CE) Mass Comm in Modern Society (elective or communications)

STAT 3233 (ME) Applied Statistics (elective or math)

How will I know my advisees CAAP scores? Both advisors and students have access to the student's unofficial transcript via WFF or WFS.  At the beginning of the transcript will be "Test Scores".  If a student has completed all or part of the Arkansas Assessment of General Education (AAGE) exam (CAAP or former Rising Junior Exam), the scores will be recorded.  If the student has not taken any part of the AAGE, they should not enroll in an enhancement course.   Any other exams such as ACT1, SAT, ASSET, COMPASS, etc. will be found here as well.  An example follows:

Example Test Scores: You will find scores for students who have taken the CAAP exam listed on the transcript with other test scores such as the ACT.

09-08-03          AAGES*           WRIT = 58,      ESAY = 350**

09-08-03          AAGEP WRIT = 7,        ESAY = 54

09-08-03          AAGEN            WRIT = 12,      ESAY = 76

04-28-03          AAGES*           MATH = 59***ALGB = 15, ALGC = 17

04-28-03          AAGEP MATH = 61,     ALGB = 50, ALGC = 83

04-28-03          AAGEN            MATH = 62,     ALGB = 48, ALGC = 81

04-28-03          AAGEM            MATH = 2

04-01-02          ACT1   ENGL = 15, MATH = 14, READ = 24, SCRS = 17

If a student is under an ASU bulletin, other than the 2002 + year, are they obligated to take an enhancement course? No. Only students under the bulletin year starting with 2002 or later are obligated to take an enhancement course.   However, at this time there all students should graduate under a 2007 or newer catalog.

If a student has two AAGES scores in either Math or Eng that conflict with each other (in other words, they have one passing score and one that requires a specific enhancement) ASU will accept the highest score, regardless of the dates the exams are taken.

I am taking my English II course online.  How will I be assessed? Academic Affairs, following the completion of this course, will notify you as to when you will be assessed.

What if the student does not pass the enhancement course? If a student does not pass the specified enhancement, they will be required to retake the course until it has been satisfied.

My advisee took English II and College Algebra in high school. In this case, the student will be notified by Academic Affairs, probably in their first semester of enrollment, when and where they will be assessed.

My advisee transferred in from another campus.  The student will be notified when and where they will be assessed.  If the student has completed an associate degree at one of the institutions with an ASU articulation agreement, their general education is assumed complete and are not obligated to enhancement credit.  The student may be asked to take an assessment for reporting purposes if they have not previously taken the CAAP.

My advisee has CLEP credit for College Algebra.  Do they still need to participate in an assessment?”  Yes.  Just because a student passes the CLEP exam does not guarantee they will also pass the associated assessment.
