Jill Simmons

Yesterday

Yesterday, my life was similar to many of yours.  I was a traditional college student (at that other school in the other corner of the state).  I won’t name the school but you are welcome to stop by and see my hog hat any time.  I lived in a residence hall and was very active in student organizations.  In fact, my involvement on campus was the catalyst that lead me to my current profession.  I completed a Bachelors of Fine Arts with a concentration in charcoal and watercolor.  Following this degree, I received a Master’s degree at the University of Rhode Island in College Student Personnel.  I returned to Arkansas in 1997 when I took an academic advising job with Arkansas State University.

Today

Today, I am still very much like many of you.  I am a full-time parent, employee and student.  With the help of my husband, I am raising two boys (Nathan and Stefan), a dog (Rosie) and a handful of critters (currently Frog and Hamstie) thanks to my youngest son.  I started back to college last year seeking a doctorate in Educational Leadership.  I’m certain this was God’s way of reminding me what it is like to fill out financial aid paperwork, show up for class and write papers into the wee hours of the night.  However, I wouldn’t trade any of these experiences for an easier path.  I absolutely adore my profession as I spend my days helping others navigate their way through higher education and reach their goals.  So, if you have an academic concern, I encourage you to visit with your academic advisor or stop by the Wilson Advising Center.  “We’ll be sure and leave the light on for ya.”

Tomorrow

  • I look forward to reading any book I desire and making it to the end uninterrupted
  • I look forward to taking any class I desire for free (Silver Senior’s Plan)
  • I look forward to having a big porch with a comfortable rocker where I can talk about anything I desire and get away with it under the guise of dementia
