High School Core Deficiencies:

What Advisors Need to Know: If a student lacks a high school core unit, advisors will assist student in choosing from the appropriate set of courses listed in the chart below.  The student will need to take the course within the first year of enrollment. The student will have a hold on his or her account indicated that they need to take a particular course due to a high school core deficiency.

Arkansas ACT 1290 of 1997 as it Applies to High School Graduates Beginning 2002 Restricted Admission Policy for High School Graduates Who Have Not Met the State High School College Core Requirements

I.  Public School Students

Students who lack the approved state college core at the time of high school graduation or who fail to complete the state core with a 2.00 GPA, must complete 12 hours of general education courses with a 2.00 GPA within the first 30 degree hours of enrollment at Arkansas State University.  These hours are in addition to any developmental courses required of the student because of his or her ACT, SAT, COMPASS or ASSET scores.

Students who are lacking college core courses must enroll in a course or courses designated as closely related to those core subjects they did not complete while in high school. Students who complete the high school core with less than a 2.00 GPA must complete one course from each of the core areas and UC 1022 – Strategies for College Success with a GPA of 2.00 within the first 30 degree hours of enrollment at Arkansas State University.  Required “general education” courses most closely paralleling the high school core are listed below.

II.  GED, Home-Schooled and Private School Students

In accordance with state law, Arkansas State University will not require college core evaluation of students who have earned a GED, are home-schooled, or graduate from private high schools.  However, students who score less than a composite ACT score of 19 must complete one course from each of the core areas (see previous table) with a GPA of 2.00 within the first 30 degree hours of enrollment at Arkansas State University.

As required of all ASU students with an ACT composite score below 19, students will be required to participate in the Right Start Program and must complete any developmental courses as indicated by ACT scores in English, math and reading.  Students also must successfully complete UC 1022 - Strategies for College Success.

III. General Information

Students seeking an Associate of Arts or Baccalaureate degree who did not successfully meet the high school college core must complete 12 hours of core academic course work with a 2.00 GPA.  Students seeking the Associate of Applied Science, Associate of General Studies, or technical certificate must complete 6 hours (excluding developmental courses) of core course work and 6 hours of technical/degree course work with a cumulative GPA of 2.00.

ASU will use all credit courses taken by the student in calculating the cumulative GPA for other university purposes.  It is ASU policy that all students who fail to achieve a current and cumulative 2.00 GPA in each semester of enrollment are subject to the suspension policy.
