Quick Reference - Polices and Updates:

Academic Clemency – A provision allowing a one-time, irrevocable calculation of GPA and credit hours toward graduation to be based upon work done after a prolonged separation from college (All previous coursework is forfeited). Students must satisfy each of the following before applying for an academic clemency through the Registrar’s Office.

(1) Separation from all academic institutions for at least five years, and then;
(2) completion of a minimum of twelve semester hours of graded courses from a regionally accredited institution of higher education with a 2.0 or higher GPA, and;
(3) formal application with the registrar.

Academic Probation - Students are placed on academic probation when their current or institutional GPA is below 2.0

Academic Suspension - Studentson academic probation will be suspended for poor scholarship when their current semester and Fall or Spring institutional ASU cumulative GPA are both below the required 2.00.

  • First Suspension: Student must participate in Restart@state Program during next enrollment period.  Any student with an absence of two or more years from onset of academic suspension is not required to participate in this program.  UPDATE: Selected transfer work may be accepted following a first suspension.  See 2006-2007 Bulletin for policy clarification.
  • Second Suspension: If student has already participated in the Restart@state Program, student must sit out one term
  • Third & Subsequent Suspension: If student has already participated in the Restart@state Program, student must sit out one year.

Advisor Note:
(1) Arkansas State University will not accept for transfer any credit earned at other institutions during a period the student is on mandatory suspension at ASU.
(2) Students planning to change their major area of study should obtain the petition for readmission form from the dean of the college from which they were dismissed and then present the form to the dean of the college in which they intend to pursue their studies. These students who have not declared a major should direct readmission requests to University College.

Advisor Note: Academic eligibility for Summer enrollment will not be affected by the academic status at the close of the Spring semester; however, academic performance during the Summer may be considered when determining readmission for the Fall semester.

Advisor Note:Students can initiate an appeal to an academic suspension by meeting with their advisor who will complete the process for the student.  Click here for more information. Appeals Process

Grade Recalculation - A student may repeat up to 18 semester hours in which grades of "D" or "F" were earned and have only the last grade counted in computing the grade point average for undergraduate degree requirements. This repeat policy is applicable to the first baccalaureate degree only. Both grades will be counted on all other repeated courses; however, degree hours may by applied only once toward graduation requirements. Students may not repeat for credit any course in which they have earned a "C" or better. Further, grades of "F" will not be used to replace an earned "D." A formal request for recomputation of grade point averages must be completed and filed with the registrar in order to have only the last grade counted for courses which have been repeated. Developmental courses are not included in the "Repeating of Courses" policy.

Advisor Note:Many students are unfamiliar with the option to repeat a class. Even students who repeated a class may not know that they are responsible for initiating the grade recomputation process.

Junior Senior Hours – Students must complete a minimum of 45 junior/senior hours (3000-4000 level courses) after their first 30 hours.

Maximum Academic Loads - The maximum academic load for students with less than a 3.50 cumulative grade point average shall not exceed 18 hours (including internet, transfer and correspondence work) per semester or 14 hours for summer term except for senior students who will be permitted to carry a one-hour overload during the last enrollment period (semester or five-week term) if the one-hour overload will complete graduation requirements. Students taking classes at ASU and another campus during the same enrollment period will only receive credit for eighteen hours total for that semester.   Students holding a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 or above may request permission of the dean of their college to schedule up to 21 hours in a semester and seven hours in each five-week summer term. (This policy is applicable only on a five-days-per-week schedule.) Students should enroll for no more than fifteen semester hours on a three-day schedule (MWF), or no more than twelve semester hours on a two-day schedule (TR). The total academic load resulting from concurrent enrollments at Arkansas State University and other institutions shall not exceed the maximum loads stated above.
